Fact File:

Companies of all sizes use many types of time and attendance systems to gather information about the amount of time employees spend on their work, when they clock on and clock off, what they have worked on, detailed information of specific work tasks, sickness, lateness, absences.  Traditional, swipe & biometric are types of time and attendance systems.

Some small companies still use time clock systems because they are economical and easy to use, just plug the clock into the wall, set the time and start recording hours.  Automated time and attendance systems provide an alternative to mechanical time clock systems or paper based timesheets.

The first clock machine was invented in November 1888 by a Jeweller in New York, a year later his brother started mass producing these along with time cards.  The time cards usually had the workdays and time in and time out areas marked on them so that employees could “punch in” or “punch out” in the correct place.  The employee was responsible to line up the correct area of the card to be punched with an indicator on the time card.
